What is it about a new year that energizes us and motivates us to have a fresh start? Whether it’s New Year’s resolutions, professional ambitions, or personal goals, the start of 2023 is a chance to look forward and consider what’s to come. Our team particularly loves watching the world of interior design to see what trends are emerging for the year. Spoiler alert: we absolutely LOVE the design direction we’re seeing for 2023! It’s filled with personality, texture, and color. Here are 5 of the design trends we think you will see everywhere this year (including in our own homes)…
The Return of Color
We love a good neutral, but we are thrilled to declare 2023 as the year of color. While saturated reds and pinks topped many color experts’ lists this year, you can do no wrong when it comes to color. It’s really about personal preference from rich jewel tones to soothing pastels to warm earth tones. You can be adventurous and try this trend with a vivid all-over paint color or simply sprinkle a few colorful accents around your space. The possibilities are truly endless. Statement Stone
Dramatic veining, high contrast, and even different color stone like burgundy, rosy pink, and evergreen will dominate 2023. Whether it’s marble, soapstone, travertine, basalt, onyx, or another selection, statement stone is both luxe and eye-catching. This trend isn’t just reserved for dramatic countertops and backsplashes either. Sculptural stone side tables, decorative vessels, and striking table lamps are sure to steal the spotlight by acting as little works of art in your home.
Mixed Metal Finishes
Gone are the days of using only one metal finish throughout the entire home. It’s become very common to mix metals, especially in the kitchen and bathroom. Mixing finishes creates a layered look that is visually interesting. We recommend selecting no more than 2-3 metal finishes in a room. Cool metals (chrome, polished nickel, brushed nickel) and warm metals (brass, copper, bronze) in particular play very well together and black is a solid neutral choice that can be layered in as a third metal to balance out the mix where desired. If you want to give this trend a try, we recommend keeping the plumbing fixtures in a consistent metal (think faucets and showerheads) and then layering in a different finish for decorative elements like cabinet hardware or mirrors.
Perfect Imperfections
If you are looking for a 2023 trend with serious staying power, look no further! Perfectly symmetrical room layouts, matching furniture sets, and uniform finishes have made way for more handmade, personal, and unique aesthetics. People are prioritizing quality, craftsmanship, and natural beauty throughout their homes. Designers and homeowners alike are embracing rooms and materials that look collected and curated over time. Antique furniture and vintage rugs mix effortlessly into any home. Unlacquered brass and copper metals patina making them only better with age. The unique wood grain and stone patterns created organically by nature are unmatched in beauty. And handmade Zellige tile’s subtle variations in color and shape landed it on our Tile Trends We Are Loving list last year because of its charming imperfection. Plus, one of our favorite byproducts of this trend is how much it encourages supporting local businesses, artists, and makers.
Power Patterns
Along with color making a comeback, pattern and, specifically, the mixing of multiple patterns is taking center stage again. If you are a regular reader of our blog, you know that a nod to traditional design (an updated traditional, if you will) came back in a big way in 2022. It brought us checkered floors, decorative ceilings, dark & moody rooms, the coastal grandmother trend, and so much more that we still adore in 2023. Pattern play is really an extension of that movement away from predominately gray-and-white minimalism into more lived-in, cozy interiors. Soft florals, preppy plaids, classic stripes, neutral animal prints, and more can be used sparingly or with vigor. It’s really all about your personal taste!
