It’s time to rise and shine, and what better way to do that than with doughnuts? Charlotte neighborhoods have some great doughnut shops, but you can also find a variety of local baker’s confections in other area coffee shops and restaurants. Here are our favorite spots for doughnuts in 28205:
The smallest shop on the block is actually a storage closet-turned-doughnut window. Reigning Doughnuts has daily flavors including vanilla icing, chocolate icing, honey glaze, cinnamon sugar, powdered sugar, and plain—don’t forget to add sprinkles. The doughnut window also offers a daily doughnut, ranging in flavors from hot sauce icing with crispy chicken skins to peanut butter icing with banana chips.
The experimental coffee shop Trade and Lore has two locations in Charlotte: inside Salud Cerveceria on North Davidson Street, and next to Advent Coworking in the Belmont neighborhood. At this shop you can not only find wood-fired cinnamon rolls, but also a variety of local pastries and doughnust from purveyors like Whisk + Wood and Sugarrmann cronuts.
You wouldn’t think chicken wings and doughnuts go together, but they do at Billy Jack’s Shack in NoDa. The casual eatery that took the spot of North Davidson Public House has a sugar-loaded dessert menu, including the Psycho Girl Scout doughnut (peanut butter, chocolate chips, and toasted marshmallow) and Barb’s Desk Drawer doughnut (buttercream frosting and M&Ms).
The Hobbyist is the latest coffee shop/wine bar/bottle shop to open in Optimist Park. The store has a daily rotating selection of munchies from grab-and-go salads and cheeses to quiches, and they also get deliveries from local doughnut maker Move That Dough. Check the store on Saturdays for the latest doughnut drop.
Located across from Area 15, Burney’s Sweets and More opened with fanfare for the filled croissants, but don’t sleep on the doughnuts! The bakery offers a variety of cake and yeast doughnuts. Go for the classics like glazed and chocolate or vanilla with sprinkles.
