Opening a new business is challenging. Throw a pandemic on top of it and it is a whole other level. In a time filled with uncertainty and lots of construction and supplier delays, let’s both celebrate and support the restaurants, coffee shops, and other new businesses opening in the area.
Orto
Coming Soon in NoDa
Construction is underway on the latest restaurant venture of Paul Verica, the owner and chef of The Stanley in Elizabeth. Orto, which is Italian for “vegetable garden”, will have house-made pastas and pizzas. We are especially excited to try the rectangular, Detroit-style pizza when this new Italian restaurant opens.

The Degenerate
Now Open in Villa Heights
The grand opening of The Degenerate was scheduled to be the very same day that North Carolina shut down restaurant operations in March due to COVID-19. Luckily for us and Villa Heights, the owners pushed through and officially opened during the summer. As a nod to their favorite flavors of NYC, the owners and chef have created an eclectic menu that mixes many different cuisines. You will find everything from pierogies to falafel to chicken bahn mi as well as a full cocktail menu.
